This is Gonzales Day. The first recognized battle of the Texas
Revolution was fought in Gonzales in 1835. One Hundred and Sixty Texian
men challenged the Mexican army by refusing to surrender a brass cannon
previously given to the town as a means of protection against the
Indians. They flew the now famous flag with the single black star and
cannon with the legend, "Come And Take It". The battle of Gonzales
lasted only a few minutes but most citizens in Texas realized there was
no turning back. The war had begun!!
